Who can join Reading Bowl?
(And what does it take to be a member?)
Anyone who loves to read (or who would love to love to read!) is welcome to join Reading Bowl. We have three types of members: Casual Members, Competition Alternates, and Competition Members. A Casual Member is anyone who would like to read the books in a casual way and meet with the group to discuss them and maybe help write practice questions for our competition members. Competition Alternates are usually new members who'd like to give the competition portion of the club a try. They maybe have other obligations which keep them from coming to every meeting or can't find the time to re-read their chosen competition books as much as they'd need to in order to compete effectively. Either way, these members are also more than welcome and, who knows, after a look at the competition side, they may try for a leadership role in future competitions! Competition Members usually are older students who have had a taste of the competition in the past and are willing to dedicate the time and energy to helping PHS bring home a trophy from the State Competition! Members who fit this category will chose one of five book groups (each with four books in it) and will become trivia experts on the books in their group. They will read and, in most cases, re-read each book until they could tell you the color of the eyes of the main character and why they fell off of their bicycle on page 27. Only five members are needed for the competition but our team can contain as many as ten students. If more than five wish to be involved in the competition, there are tryouts for the spots in December just prior to the Holiday Break.
We hope that you will join us for the 2014-2015 School Year! It's going to be our year!!
